Sources and inspiration

In creating his Triumph of Religion mural cycle for the Library, Sargent drew on a wide range of visual and literary sources. He traveled frequently to see historical monuments within and beyond Europe, and made numerous visits to museums and libraries. He also sought advice from other artists, experts, and friends, and consulted scholarly publications. His goal was an ambitious one—he wanted the murals’ richness of reference to impress and edify a broad public.
