detail of AdamSargent made the crucifix from painted and gilt plaster. Modeled in high relief, it is the most sculptural of all the pieces in the Hall, with the arms and heads of the figures completely breaking free from the plane of the wall. From the letters of the sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, we know that Sargent had guidance from Saint-Gaudens and his assistant in casting Crucifix. Aside from this, it appears that Sargent did the sculptural work himself, though there are no other examples of such work by him before the Library commission.
