Pagan Gods, detail of Astarte Sargent’s depiction of Astarte shows his use of a literary source. In creating the details of Astarte’s costume, he drew on a description in Gustave Flaubert’s novel Salammbô, where the goddess’s veil appears as “diaphanous, glittering, and light.” Sargent completed the figure of Astarte, which forms part of the Pagan Gods vault area, by early 1894.
