Gassed, 1918-1919, details
Two details of Gassed, 1918–19, oil on canvas, 231 x 611.1 cm, Imperial War Museum, London*
The public attack on Synagogue and Church must have had a powerful private resonance for Sargent. In 1918, he had traveled to the European battlefront to make studies for his major war painting, Gassed, 1918–19. When he returned to his studio, he worked simultaneously on Gassed and Synagogue. Over his entire career, these two were the only paintings in which he portrayed figures with bandaged eyes.
