Hell, before installation Sargent sailed for Boston again in March 1916 to install the third portion of his murals, the six lunettes on the connecting walls between the north and the south ends of the room and the vault paintings with adjacent panels on the south wall. Sargent tested the effect of his lunettes by temporarily putting Hell—his “big Green Devil”—in place on the west wall before leaving the city in July for a two months’ sketching trip in the Canadian Rockies.
