Madonna of Sorrows, and Spanish Madonna Sargent’s ability to glean inspiration from earlier works of art bore on other important mural images. For Madonna of Sorrows, he drew on his memory of Spanish devotional images, which he had studied as a young man. When he returned to Spain in the 1890s, he created an oil sketch of a Spanish Madonna that served as one of the sources for the Madonna of Sorrows.
