Study of East Hall Decoration Sargent’s final mural installation, consisting of the Synagogue and Church paintings on the east wall, took place in October 1919. Although Sargent intended to create a third composition, Sermon on the Mount, to appear between Synagogue and Church, he never completed it. Studies from the preceding decade, in which he rendered the scene of the Sermon on the Mount as a broad landscape, reveal his intentions for this unfinished work.
