Hell

Hell

Following a medieval artistic convention for the representation of the mouth of hell, Sargent depicted the anguish of the damned while a voracious green monster consumes them. Stylized flames form the mural’s backdrop. These flames, which also appear in several places on the right side of Judgment, establish visual coherence between the Judgment and Hell lunettes and form a visual passage from one to the other.
