Passing of Souls into Heaven

Passing of Souls into Heaven

Sargent established a visual connection between Heaven and Judgment in the motion suggested by the two angels who are transporting the embodied soul from Archangel Michael’s scales to the celestial regions. The youthful soul will take up his place in the apparently endless chain of the redeemed that wind their way across the surface of the image, among the musician angels. A place of ethereal music and dance, Sargent’s Heaven seems to emit the sweet strains of angels’ harps.
