Israel and the Law

Israel and the Law

This lunette occupies an important space in Triumph of Religion: it appears directly above the panel reserved for the cycle’s keynote image: the intended Sermon on the Mount. To underscore the civic educational role of the Boston Public Library, Israel and the Law presents its protagonist, the Hebrew deity, as a teacher with the child Israel as the pupil. The child reads attentively from the scroll held before him by the divine figure that Sargent called Jehovah.
