Messianic Era

Messianic Era

In Sargent’s concept, the messianic era appears as the fulfillment of the prophecies in the scriptural book of Isaiah. Four nude male figures open golden gates leading into a new Eden, as a youth steps forward into the dawning golden age. A lamb and a wolf play together in the foreground, and a young child and a lion appear together just behind the central figural group. The Hebrew inscription on the gilded scroll bears Isaiah’s prophecy: “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given…”
