Church

Church

Sargent’s Church, a static and hieratic enthroned figure, stares straight ahead with unseeing eyes. The body of the dead Christ is suspended between her knees as she holds aloft gilded emblems of the eucharistic meal, his own body and blood. Symbols of the four evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John—already familiar to us from their use in Sargent’s Mysteries of the Rosary—surround Church’s shoulders and head; the names of the four “greater prophets” (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Daniel, Ezekiel) decorate the arms of her throne.
