Sketch for Sermon on the Mount

Sermon on the Mount

Sargent never painted Sermon on the Mount, which he identified as the cycle’s “keynote” and “central feature.” Our sense of what the image might have looked like depends on a few sketches and a small number of verbal descriptions. It is possible, nonetheless, to piece together a good idea of what the artist envisioned for this painting. This undated pencil sketch represents his most complete working out of the subject.
