Cleaning the Sargent murals: Introduction
A critical component of the 2003 restoration is the cleaning of the
murals. Conservators strive to understand many of the issues relating
to a work of art before starting a cleaning treatment, since
misguided efforts can lead to damage. Issues include the artist’s
materials and techniques, his aesthetic intent, the nature of the grime
to be removed, environmental conditions, and the effects of past
restorations. Conservators also use visual examinations, scientific
analyses, and reviews of archival records to develop treatment methods.
