Cleaning the Sargent murals: IntroductionA critical component of the 2003 restoration is the cleaning of the murals. Issues include the artist’s materials and techniques, his aesthetic intent, the nature of the grime to be removed, environmental conditions, and the effects of past restorations. Conservators also use visual examinations, scientific analyses, and reviews of archival records to develop treatment methods. |
