Lighting history: Introduction
The architects McKim, Mead and White introduced electric lighting, a new technology in the late-19th century, into the design of the Library. Sargent incorporated both custom-designed electric light fixtures and daylight into his conception of the Hall, thereby enhancing his innovative use of materials and relief elements in the murals.
