Oil on canvas

Oil paint on canvas forms the flat surfaces of the murals. The paint consists of pigments bound in an oil medium. After Sargent painted the canvases, which were cut to a variety of shapes and sizes, they were glued to the walls and ceiling using a technique called marouflage.
