Murals by Sargent, Abbey, and Puvis de Chavannes

As an integral part of their design for the Library, the architects commissioned large-scale murals from leading artists of the day. John Singer Sargent and his contemporaries, Edwin Austin Abbey and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, painted murals that decorate three of the most prominent spaces in the building. This photograph shows the Puvis de Chavannes murals in place on the east wall of the loggia. The white arched niches await the next installation of murals.
