Installation of Sargent’s
Triumph of Religion

The decorative painting firm of John Perry, Incorporated, installed some of Sargent’s canvases at the Boston Public Library. In a letter to Edward Forbes (1938), then director of the Fogg Art Museum, Perry described the process: “paint plaster walls, two or three coats of lead and oil paint; when dry, apply a heavy coat of lead and (Venetian) varnish, making a heavy past (paste). Apply the canvas and roll out all air bubbles, creases etc.”
