Treatment procedures

In choosing an appropriate treatment procedure, a conservator first becomes familiar with the physical properties of the work of art through close examination and scientific analysis. The treatment may involve several phases. Stabilization of loose or broken areas is the first priority in preventing further damage. Conservators may then reduce surface grime and discolored coatings if necessary. Losses are filled and damaged areas are inpainted to reintegrate them into the composition.
