Death and Victory
The mural on the left, Death and Victory, glorifies the grim price that this war exacted. A lone Harvard soldier, gripped closely by the partly shrouded figure of Death, embraces the form of beautiful, luminous Victory, with her palm branch held high. Beneath his feet lies a fallen German, amid blood, barbed wire, and ammunition—the mortal enemy defined. The jingoistic, collective fervor of Entering becomes here an altarpiece for a youthful martyr.
