In the fall of 1873, Sargent enrolled at the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Florence, where he executed this accomplished drawing. At the time, drawing from casts of antique sculpture was considered a crucial step in the training of art students. With only this brief formal art education, Sargent joined the atelier of the painter Carolus-Duran in Paris in May of 1874.
