Sargent’s Dogma of the Redemption for the south end of the hall was installed in 1903. In 1901, Sargent exhibited—once again, at London’s Royal Academy—an important work that would form a significant portion of the finished mural: a version of the Crucifix. Sargent was deeply proud of his Crucifix, which he fashioned in relief so high that it approaches sculpture in-the-round. Sargent made bronze reductions of this work as gifts for friends.
